Big Piles of Rocks and Little Horses

Sunday was our first big cultural excursion in Sardinia. We got on the bus at 9 am in drizzly weather and headed toward Barumini for the day.

We started off the day at Casa Zapata, a house that was built using an ancient Nuraghe structure as the foundation. The museum had an assortment of ancient as well as more recent artifacts that our wonderful tour guides explained to us.

From there we headed out to Su Naraxi, a UNESCO World Heritage Nuraghe site that was discovered and excavated in the 1950s. We were able to walk around inside and explore the site and managed to avoid anyone  falling over the edge or down the steep and narrow stairways.

After that we broke for a delicious lunch, including cake for Danielle's birthday! From lunch we headed up to the top of the plateau where Parco della Giara is located in search of miniature horses. We actually managed to find a few less small than expected horses, as well as dung beetles, an angry looking bull, a lot of interesting wild herbs and an old shepherd's hut.

After our hike, we headed back down the mountain to our tour guide's shop for refreshments and to buy some authentic Sardinian food. From there we headed back to Cagliari after a tiring but fun and interesting day.
